Guidance for the Journey

The theme for Advent this year causes us to seek to look to God for hope for the future.  In our modern life, hope is often in short supply and I know that many folks have expressed a weariness with their lives because they have lost hope that there will be any change in their experiences going forward.

We light the second candle of Advent as we look to Scripture as a guide for our spiritual journey.  The Bible has been given us, not as a set of rules and regulations, but as the shared experiences of the People of God down through the ages, helping us learn through their eyes how to relate to God and to one another, how to be practical servants of God, how to allow the principles of spiritual thinking make a difference in the way decisions are made and priorities set.

The Psalmist tells us:  "Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."  It is obvious that those who learned God's way came to rely on the guidance of the Holy Writings to keep them aware of God's thoughts and principles so that their hearts remain fixed on the doing of God's will.  Strange as it may seem, it is in that doing that hearts are filled with hope.  God has clearly told us that we are never to be without hope, in God's presence, in God's truth, and in the ultimate triumph of God over all that is evil.

And now Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witness of Christ our Lord.  To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and forever,  Amen.
