Power and Promise:

The scripture passage from Genesis 18 tells of God’s appearance to Abraham in disguise to inform him that the promise of Genesis 12:2: “I will make of you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing” will be fulfilled through the birth of a son despite the couple’s advanced years.

This story reveals the various forms of epiphany by which God makes known to humans what God intends to do through us, despite the apparent obstacles, when we are willing to be agents of God’s purpose. The contrast between God’s power and human doubt is emphasized by Sarah’s response of laughter at the possibility of bearing a child. Yet this very response provides the opportunity to consider: “Is anything too hard for the Lord?”
