Exodus 17:1-7; Psalm 78:1-4, 12-16; Philippians 2:1-13; Matthew 21:23-32
Fun Fact:
Most scholars believe Philippians 2:6–11 was an early Christian hymn with deep theological meaning, perhaps originally composed by Paul himself, or at least already existing in Paul’s day.
The hymn has two verses, and the movement of the second exactly reverses the movement of the first. In the first verse, Christ Jesus starts out being in the form of God, humbles himself to descend to earth, and then is further humbled by death. In the second verse, Christ is raised to highest heaven while winning the allegiance of every sphere through which he has passed—those in heaven and on earth and underneath the earth. The name that is above every name is surely “Lord.”
