Exodus 12:1-14

Psalm 149

Romans 13:8-14

Matthew 18:15-20

In Matthew 18:15-20, Jesus teaches on the church’s authority, care, and responsibility to seek reconciliation and forgiveness in times of conflict. Our calling is to care for one another, even when injured or offended, seeking repentance and forgiveness, in the promise that we are all sustained in Christ.

“18Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. 19Again, truly I tell you, if two of you agree on earth about anything you ask, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. 20For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.”

The expressions “bind” and “loose” were common to Jewish legal phraseology meaning to declare something forbidden or to declare it allowed.

Biblical commentator Jin S. Kin states: “The ministry of reconciliation must be at the heart of any Christian community’s mission..…There will be conflict, but it is precisely through conflict that we model for the world how to bind and loose one another appropriately.”
