“You shall not find on the roll of history that for a length of time any Christian community has flourished after it has become negligent of the outside world.”                                                                                             —Charles Haddon Spurgeon

“The Church is the only institution that exists primarily for the benefit of those who are not its members.”

           —William Temple

OPENING HYMN:                                                  O Beautiful for Spacious Skies

O beautiful for spacious skies, For amber waves of grain,

For purple mountain majesties Above the fruited plain!

America! America! God shed His grace on thee,

And crown thy good with brotherhood From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for heroes proved In liberating strife,

Who more than self their country loved, And mercy more than life!

America! America! May God thy gold refine

Till all success be nobleness And every gain divine!

O beautiful for patriot dream That sees beyond the years

Thine alabaster cities gleam, Undimmed by human tears!

America! America! God shed His grace on thee

And crown thy good with brotherhood From sea to shining sea!

(THE PRESBYTERIAN HYMNAL #564)

CONFESSION OF SINS

Loving God, you have given us rich and abundant blessings, the greatest of which is the full forgiveness of sins and the indwelling Holy Spirit. Yet, rather than rejoice in the giver, we often spend your gifts selfishly. Our lives have become thin, without worship, without joy, without courage and without love. Forgive us Lord. Renew us in the grace that abounds to the broken-hearted. Turn us away from all self-salvation strategies. Return us to your loving embrace. Remind us of the full salvation purchased by our sacrificing elder brother, the Lord Jesus Christ. Grant unto us the joy of our salvation! Amen.

ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS

OFFERING

SONG:                                                          Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below;

Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

(THE PRESBYTERIAN HYMNAL #592)

OLD TESTAMENT READING:

Isaiah 42:1-9

42 Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. 2 He will not cry or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; 3 a bruised reed he will not break, and a dimly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. 4 He will not grow faint or be crushed until he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his teaching.

5 Thus says God, the Lord, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it: 6 I am the Lord, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations, 7 to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. 8 I am the Lord, that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to idols. 9 See, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth, I tell you of them.

NEW TESTAMENT READING:

Matthew 3:13-17

13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. 14 John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” 15 But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. 16 And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.”

SERMON:                                                                   “The Baptism of the King”                                                               Dr. Working

THE APOSTLES’ CREED (Traditional)

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

MORNING PRAYERS AND LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

BENEDICTION

SONG:                                                                  The Lord Bless You and Keep You

The Lord bless you and keep you, the Lord lift His countenance upon you, and give you peace.

The Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious unto you. Amen.
