AFFIRMATION OF FAITH:
We believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, who does not
explain every wound before he heals, and who will not let suffering have the last word.
We believe in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, the light of the world, who spat on the ground and made clay, who sent a man to wash, who gave sight where there had never been sight, and who is still at work while it is day. We believe in the Holy Spirit, who opens eyes the law cannot open, who grants us to see Jesus and to confess him as Lord. Amen.
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
God of light, we have asked the wrong question. We have stood before pain and looked
first for blame—whose sin, whose fault, whose failure. We have walked past those you
mean to heal because we were busy explaining them. We have loved our certainty more than your work. We have called ourselves sighted while we would not see the One you sent. Forgive us. Open what we have shut. Give us the courage of the man who could only say what you had done for him. Through Jesus Christ, the light of the world. Amen.

Thus says God, the Lord, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon it
and spirit to those who walk in it: I am the Lord, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. I am the Lord, that is my name my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to idols. New Testament Reading John 9: 1-16 Page 102
As he walked along, he saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked him, ‘Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?’ Jesus answered, ‘Neither this man nor his parents sinned; he was born blind so that God’s works might be revealed in him. We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.’ When he had said this, he spat on the ground and made mud with the saliva and spread the mud on the man’s eyes, saying to him, ‘Go, wash in the pool of Siloam’ (which means Sent). Then he went and washed and came back able to see. The neighbours and those who had seen him before as a beggar began to ask, ‘Is this not the man who used to sit and beg?’ Some were saying, ‘It is he.’ Others were saying, ‘No, but it is someone like him.’ He kept saying, ‘I am the man.’ But they kept asking him, ‘Then how were your eyes opened?’ He answered, ‘The man called Jesus made mud, spread it on my eyes, and said to me, “Go to Siloam and wash.” Then I went and washed and received my sight.’ They said to him, ‘Where is he?’ He said, ‘I do not know.’ They brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind.
