People: And to our God, for he will abundantly pardon!

     OPENING HYMN – #260 - A Mighty Fortress Is Our God (Blue Hymnal)

1 A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing;

Our helper He, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing:
For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe;
His craft and power are great, and, armed with cruel hate,
On earth is not his equal.

2 Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing;
Were not the right Man on our side, the Man of God’s own choosing:
Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He;
Lord Sabaoth, His Name, from age to age the same,
And He must win the battle.

3 And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us,
We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us:
The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him;
His rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure,
One little word shall fell him.

4 That word above all earthly powers, no thanks to them, abideth;
The Spirit and the gifts are ours through Him Who with us sideth:
Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also;
The body they may kill: God’s truth abideth still,
His kingdom is forever.

  AFFIRMATION OF FAITH: The Heidelberg Catechism, Lord's Day 8 Q & A 24
Q. How are the sections of the Apostles' Creed divided?
A. Into three parts: God the Father and our creation; God the Son and our deliverance; and God the Holy Spirit and our sanctification.
Q. Since there is only one divine being, why do you speak of three: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit?
A. Because that is how God has revealed himself in his Word: these three distinct persons are one, true, eternal God.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Lord God, eternal Father, we acknowledge before your holiness that we are  born into guilt and in corruption, prone to do wrong and unable of our own power to do good. Because of our sin, we endlessly violate your holy commandments. But, Lord, with humble hearts we repent and turn away from our offenses. Have compassion on us, Father of all mercies, for the sake of your son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. And in removing our guilt, also grow us daily in the grace of your Holy Spirit, and produce in us the fruits of a life that is pleasing in your sight, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

SILENT CONFESSION      PRAYERS FOR GOD’S PEOPLE

                                             Old Testament Reading - Deuteronomy 6:4-9 Page 163

Hear, O Israel: The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might.  Keep these words that I am commanding you today in your heart.  Recite them to your children and talk about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise.  Bind them as a sign on your hand, fix them as an emblem on your forehead,  and write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

New Testament Reading – Luke 3:21-22; Page 60, 2 Corinthians 13:13 Page 186

Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened,  and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, ‘You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with all of you.

HOLY COMMUNION

           CLOSING HYMN  #276 - Great Is Thy Faithfulness (Blue Hymnal)

1 Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father,
There is no shadow of turning with Thee;
Thou changest not, Thy compassions they fail not;
As Thou hast been Thou forever will be.

Refrain:
Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see;
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided; Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

2 Summer and winter and springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon, and stars in their courses above
Join with all nature in manifold witness
To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love. (Refrain)

Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide;
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside! (Refrain)
