Q. What is the aim of the ninth commandment?
A. That I never give false testimony against anyone, twist no one’s words, not gossip or slander, nor join in condemning anyone rashly. Rather, in court and everywhere else, I should avoid lying and deceit of every kind; these are the very devices the devil uses, and they would call down on me God’s intense wrath.
I should love the truth, speak it candidly, and openly acknowledge it. And I should do what I can to guard and advance my neighbor’s good name.
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
God of glory, you sent Jesus among us as the light of the world, to reveal your love for us, and to redeem us as a people who walk in your light. But we have obscured the glory of your presence within us by sinning in thought, word, and deed. We have often chosen to walk in the darkness rather than in your light. In your mercy, fill us again with your Spirit, that, forgiven and renewed, we may fall down and worship you, showing forth the glory that shines in the face of Jesus Christ. Amen.
